Capturing Sunshine Amidst Rain: A Citrus-Themed Photoshoot
Situated along the Murray section of the Jordan Parkway Trail, I had the delightful opportunity to collaborate with Nakisha on a vibrant portrait session that celebrated the natural beauty of citrus fruits. The bold colors and refreshing essence of these fruits became the focal point of our creative endeavor. Nakisha’s strapless orange dress harmoniously complemented the vivid hues of limes, lemons, and oranges, turning each shot into a visual feast.
But as Utah weather would have it, the skies opened up, and rain became an unexpected guest during our session. Rather than letting it dampen our spirits, we turned the rain into an ally, enhancing the mood and energy of the photos. Here’s a look into our citrus-inspired shoot and some tips for embracing rain during your next outdoor portrait session.
The Setting: Jordan River Parkway Trail in Murray, Utah
Located in the heart of Salt Lake County, the Jordan Parkway Trail is a beautiful gem that offers lush greenery, winding paths, and a sense of serenity. This trail is perfect for portrait photography, with its diverse landscapes providing a dynamic backdrop that changes with the seasons. On this particular day, the overcast sky added a soft, diffused light that made the colors of the citrus and Nakisha’s outfit pop against the natural surroundings.
The Concept: Citrus as the Star
The inspiration behind this shoot was the vibrant and refreshing nature of citrus fruits. We wanted to capture their bright, joyful essence. The sheer yellow curtain we strung up served as a soft, dreamy backdrop, allowing the citrus fruits to take center stage.
Key Shots and Poses
Balancing Acts: We played with different arrangements of the fruit, having Nakisha balance limes, lemons, and oranges in her hands and on her arms. These shots captured the playful side of the session, with the bright colors contrasting against her orange dress.
Slicing and Dicing: To add variety, we brought along a cutting board and a knife. Nakisha sliced the citrus in half, and we used the fresh slices as props. Some of the most striking shots featured her holding the fruit slices up to her face, allowing the vibrant colors to frame her features.
Citrus in Motion: One of the highlights was capturing Nakisha squeezing the citrus fruits, letting the juice drip down her hands. This created a sense of movement and life in the photos, with the droplets adding a dynamic element to the still images.
Taste of Citrus: To add a candid and spontaneous feel, we had Nakisha take bites of the citrus. Her reactions, from playful grimaces to genuine smiles, added authenticity and fun to the shoot.
Embracing and Overcoming the Rain
As the portrait session progressed, the weather took an unexpected turn. Rain started to fall, and rather than calling it a day, we decided to embrace the elements. Here are some tips we followed to ensure the rain added to the shoot rather than detracted from it:
1. Prepare for the Unexpected with Outdoor Photography
Utah’s weather can be unpredictable, so it’s always wise to be prepared. Having a few umbrellas on hand, waterproof covers for your camera gear, and a towel can help protect your equipment while keeping the shoot going. We made sure to keep our essentials dry, allowing us to continue shooting without interruption.
2. Use the Rain to Your Advantage
Rain can add a magical, ethereal quality to photos. The soft light that comes with overcast skies reduces harsh shadows, creating a natural, flattering glow. The rain itself can create beautiful reflections on surfaces, add texture to the background, and even create a sense of movement when captured mid-fall. For our photography session, the rain enhanced the citrus theme, making the fruits appear even more refreshing and alive.
3. Embrace the Mood
Rain often brings a sense of calm and intimacy to a shoot. I encouraged Nakisha to interact with the rain, letting it fall on her skin and play with her hair. These moments added a raw, natural feel to the photos, making them more authentic and memorable. The rain also helped bring out the colors in the scene, making the citrus fruits and Nakisha’s dress even more vibrant against the muted backdrop.
4. Keep the Session Fun and Light-hearted
A positive attitude goes a long way in making a rain-soaked shoot successful. Instead of viewing the rain as a hindrance, we saw it as an opportunity to create something unique. Nakisha’s willingness to embrace the weather made the session enjoyable, and her playful spirit shone through in every shot.
Final Thoughts: The Joy of Citrus and Rain
This portrait session with Nakisha at the Jordan Parkway Trail showcased the beauty of creativity and adaptability. By blending the bright, zesty energy of citrus fruits with the unexpected rain, we crafted a series of portraits that are both vibrant and evocative. Instead of being a setback, the rain became a vital element of the shoot, adding depth and dimension to each image.
Whether you’re a photographer or someone planning a portrait session, don’t shy away from the elements. Utah’s diverse weather can be an asset if you’re willing to embrace it. And when it comes to themes, let your imagination run wild—something as simple as citrus fruits can inspire an entire session, resulting in photos that are fresh, lively, and full of character.
