He Had a Ring, a Plan, and a Sunrise | A Surprise Proposal at Bryce Canyon National Park

When Garrett first reached out for surprise proposal photography, he had a visit to Zion and Bryce Canyon already on the calendar and a ring burning a hole in his pocket. He wanted to propose to his girlfriend Leah somewhere in the Parks, with the whole thing captured candidly in the moment. No staged couple session, no heads-up for her. Just a completely surprised reaction caught on camera by a photographer she had no idea was there.
Planning a Surprise Proposal When You’re Traveling From Out of State
Garrett was flexible between Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon National Park, which I always appreciate. It gives me room to make the best recommendation based on timing, lighting, and logistics. After talking through their itinerary, we landed on Bryce Canyon at sunrise.
For surprise proposals, one of the first things I always ask is: what’s your vision? Some couples want it woven into a couple session, so it feels organic and low-pressure. Others, like Garrett, want the whole thing to be a complete surprise from start to finish, with me blending into the crowd until the magical moment happens. Knowing that upfront shapes everything about how I position myself, how I communicate with the proposing partner beforehand, and how I introduce myself afterward.
One thing I always suggest to clients planning a surprise proposal is to take some selfies with your partner or solo shots of each other before you pop the question. If you’re feeling nervous, this gives you something to do as you gather the nerve to pull the ring out of your pocket or bag and drop to a knee. The Morning Everything Changed
Sunrise at Bryce Canyon in early June is just after 6 AM. I pulled into the parking lot as blue hour was wrapping up and immediately spotted Garrett and Leah in the car right behind me. My husband came along to help me blend in with the other sunrise-chasers already gathering at the viewpoint. We positioned ourselves near one of the informational plaques, looking every bit like a landscape photographer duo who woke up early to enjoy the view. I was capturing the scenery while keeping eyes on the couple as they made their way up the hill toward the amphitheater overlook.
They stood together taking in the sweeping view into the canyon below, those iconic rust-red hoodoos glowing in the early light. After a while, they moved toward the spot Garrett and I had discussed, and they sat down to watch the sun rise on the horizon together. Then they stood up, started taking selfies, handed the camera back and forth.
And then Garrett dropped to one knee.
At the exact same moment the ring box came open, he was gently taking Leah’s point-and-shoot camera out of her hands. The look on her face: pure shock, pure joy, tears welling up immediately. He gave a beautiful speech. She said yes.
I was already moving, slowing circling the couple to get different angles without being intrusive. When they embraced, Leah looked up with tears in her eyes and said, “And you got a photographer?!”
That moment. That is always my favorite part of photographing proposals. Getting to step forward, smile, and say congratulations. Watching the realization wash over someone that not only are they engaged, but the whole thing was captured. It never gets old. It is one of the most meaningful, life-changing moments I get to witness as a photographer and I am so grateful every single time.
After the Yes: Portraits, Stories, and a Sparkling Ring
After the initial surprise and chaos settled, we moved into an engagement session. I love this part of a surprise proposal just as much as the candid moments. There’s an electric energy that comes with being freshly engaged that you simply cannot manufacture or pose into existence. The laughing, the squeezing each other’s hands, the sneaking glances at the ring. It’s all completely real, and it makes for some of the most genuine, intimate images I’ve ever captured.
Speaking of the ring: it was stunning. A gorgeous center stone surrounded by smaller diamonds crusting the edges in the most delicate, intricate setting. As the sun climbed higher over the canyon walls, it caught the light on that brand-new stone in a way that made it impossible not to photograph. That’s the magic of Bryce Canyon light at golden hour; it makes everything sparkle.
I always love hearing the story of how the ring made the journey, especially for couples flying or road-tripping in from out of state. The meticulous hiding, the fanny packs on airplanes, the specific backpacks that partners are absolutely not allowed to touch during the drive. All the careful planning that goes into getting to this special day is so personal, so full of love, and I will never get tired of hearing it.
After portraits, we wrapped up so Garrett and Leah could go celebrate their engagement and get out on the trail before the summer heat settled in for the day.

If you love the drama of the viewpoint: Bryce Canyon’s amphitheater overlooks are some of the most iconic, breathtaking locations I’ve ever photographed. The view is unreal, the light is unreal, and it gives you that incredible sense of scale. I’ve shot proposals at these viewpoints many times and it never, ever gets old. If you want to be in the hoodoos without committing to a full hike: I’ve got you. (And if you change your mind and want to hike in, I’m ready for that too.)
