Utah Family Photographer Built Around Real Moments

How Your Utah Family Photography Session Works

No forced smiles. No rigid posing lineup. No pretending your family is quieter or more coordinated than it actually is.

Instead, I show up with a loose plan, a few prompts to get everyone warmed up, and a lot of patience for whatever the day actually brings. Some of that will be classic, put-it-in-a-frame portraits. Most of it will be the unscripted stuff in between because that’s usually what people end up loving most a few years later.

Understanding Your Family’s Dynamic, Big or Small

A family of three moves through a session completely differently than a family of fifteen, so I don’t run them the same way.

Smaller households get a slower pace built around quiet, specific moments — the way a dad carries his daughter, the in-joke between siblings, the small stuff that’s easy to miss if you’re rushing.

Larger and multi-generational groups get a photographer who’s used to organizing a crowd without losing the personality in it. Think grandparents, cousins, in-laws, and every subgroup combination in between, captured without anyone getting lost in the shuffle.

Either way, your final gallery covers the full range:

  • The whole group together
  • Smaller combinations — siblings, couples, grandparents with grandkids
  • Solo portraits of each kid
  • Unposed, in-the-moment interactions
  • A handful of classic, guided shots for the ones you’ll actually print

Before, During, and After Your Session

Planning ahead. We’ll talk through timing, outfits, and what kind of energy you want the photos to have, so nothing feels last-minute when we meet up.

Choosing where. Canyon trail, open field, a favorite park, or your own living room — I’ll steer you toward whatever location matches your family’s pace and the light does the rest.

Handling the chaos. Meltdowns, snack breaks, a kid who refuses to wear the shoes you picked out — none of it throws me off. It’s part of the job.

Letting things unfold. I’ll direct just enough to get everyone comfortable, then step back and let the real moments happen. Those are usually the images people ask to reprint years later.

What Clients Notice Most

The feedback I hear most often is how the session felt. Families tell me the pace felt calm even with young kids involved, that I responded quickly to questions before and after, and that the final gallery actually looked like their family instead of a stock version of one. That’s the bar I hold myself to on every session.

Karisa was great to work with! My husband and I have two little boys who do not hold still at all, but she did a great job working with us and capturing sweet moments of our family. She was also great with communication, punctuality, and quick turn-around of our pictures. We’ll definitely be using her services again for our family.
