There’s something extra meaningful about a proposal that isn’t overly-staged just a moment tucked inside a beautiful day together. That’s exactly what this surprise proposal looked like, and it’s one of my favorite kinds of sessions to document as a Utah surprise proposal photographer.
When Elijah first reached out, he knew he wanted something natural and scenic for the proposal, but wasn’t as familiar with some of the more tucked-away areas that make for beautiful settings. Utah has an almost overwhelming number of incredible proposal spots, and the perfect location really depends on the kind of experience you’re looking for. Mountain lake? Desert overlook? Aspen trail? Alpine meadow? There’s a lot to work with, and I love helping couples narrow it down.
From Silver Lake to Wasatch Mountain State Park: Choosing the Perfect Location
After talking through a few options, we initially planned the proposal for Silver Lake up Big Cottonwood Canyon near Brighton. It’s a stunning spot, especially in late spring when the snow starts melting and everything turns that electric kind of green. But if you’ve spent any time planning outdoor photos in Utah, you already know: spring weather keeps you humble. As the date got closer, the forecast became unreliable, so we made a last-minute call to move everything to another location.
Wasatch Mountain State Park sits just outside of Midway, close to the Park City area, and it offers a little more breathing room than some of the busier canyon spots along the Wasatch Front. We had lake views, open grassy spaces, mountain backdrops, docks, shoreline, and quiet walking paths. Enough variety to make the gallery feel like multiple locations, all in one place.

Why Flexibility Is Everything for a Utah Surprise Proposal
This is something I talk about with every client planning a surprise proposal in Utah, especially in spring and fall: have a backup plan. Mountain weather can shift with almost no warning, and the couples who build in flexibility are the ones who actually enjoy the day instead of spending the week stressed about a forecast.
Small pivots like changing a date or location can completely change the experience, sometimes for the better. Whether you’re local to Salt Lake City or just not as familiar with the mountain areas, I help clients think through location options, timing, lighting, trail accessibility, and backup plans before the day even arrives. How We Kept the Surprise Proposal Believable
The best surprise proposals are almost always the simplest ones, and this one was no exception. Instead of hiding behind trees with a zoom lens, I drove up to the park with my husband and dog so we looked like any other couple out for an afternoon at the lake. It’s a low-key approach that works well in parks and open outdoor areas because nobody thinks twice about another couple and their dog wandering around.
I spotted Elijah and Sarah arriving and kept my distance while they walked down toward the water. They sat by the lake for a bit, watching the ducks, taking in the view. It looked like any regular weekend outing, which was exactly the point.
Then Elijah helped her up and walked her casually toward the dock. They took a selfie together first. Then he offered to take a photo of her by the water and asked her to look out over the lake. The second she turned back around, he was down on one knee.
That split second: the confusion, the recognition, the instant flood of emotion. It’s always my favorite moment to capture. You cannot stage it. It tells the whole story in a single frame. She turned around in a complete surprise. And she said yes.
Documenting the Moment as a Utah Engagement Photographer Without Interrupting It
One of the things people worry about most when hiring a Utah engagement photographer for a surprise proposal is that having a camera there will make the moment feel staged or self-conscious. I completely understand that concern, and it’s exactly why I stay back and blend in until the moment happens. The goal is always to document everything naturally without pulling the couple’s attention away from each other.
During the proposal itself, I focus on capturing the actual proposal, the reaction, that first hug, the ring, the laughter as the nerves fade out, and the “wait, did that actually just happen?” energy that takes over right after. All of it. Then, once they’ve had a moment to be in it together, I introduce myself and we transition into a relaxed engagement session around the park.
That’s one of my favorite things about proposal sessions: you get two stories in one gallery. The surprise. And then the joy after it sinks in. It’s a beautiful mix that no standard engagement session can replicate.
Exploring Wasatch Mountain State Park After the Proposal
Once the proposal was done, we wandered through different areas of the park and shot a mix of guided portraits and natural candid moments. This part of the session never needs to feel stiff or posed. I keep movement involved: walking, talking, sitting by the water, spinning around, just being together. The best images almost always happen in between the moments you expect.
The variety of scenery at Wasatch Mountain made it easy to keep things feeling fresh throughout the session. We moved from the dock to open fields to the shoreline without ever feeling like we were running out of places to go.

How do I decide where to propose if I don’t have a location in mind?
This is one of the most common questions I get, and it’s one of my favorite things to help with. Reach out and tell me what vibe you’re hoping for. A quiet mountain lake, something dramatic and sweeping, a spot that feels hidden away, a place that’s easy for out-of-town family to get to after. I’ll give you location suggestions based on the season, what’s accessible, and what will photograph beautifully. There’s no shortage of incredible proposal spots in Utah, and I genuinely love helping find the one that fits your story.
How far in advance should I book?
If you have a specific date in mind, don’t wait. If not, booking a month or two out is ideal for popular spots, especially during spring and fall when weekends fill up fast. However, don’t be afraid to reach out on a shorter notice as well. If I have availability, I’d love to capture this big moment!
What if my partner is suspicious or hates being in photos?
This is more common than you’d think, and it’s very workable. The key is keeping the setup casual and familiar. If your partner is camera-shy, we can plan the portrait session after the proposal to feel low-key and relaxed. Most people loosen up quickly once the big moment has already happened and the pressure is off. Also, for the guided portraits after the proposal I always follow your lead. Some couples want to fill up the rest of their session slot, others want to celebrate alone after about 15 minutes. No matter what, we’ll get some amazing photos together to complete your final gallery.
What happens if the weather is bad on the day of the proposal?
We adapt, and sometimes that means embracing it. I’ve photographed proposals in the pouring rain before, and they were still beautiful experiences. That said, we can also shift the time of day, change the location, or move the date by a day or two depending on the forecast. I help clients think through backup options during planning so that if the weather does pivot, we’re not scrambling. We already have a plan.
Do you travel for proposals outside of Salt Lake City and Park City?
Yes, and I genuinely love it. I travel throughout Utah for proposal and engagement sessions, and National Parks are some of my absolute favorite places to work.
