Capturing Authentic Connection in Couples Photography

When you book a couples, engagement, or anniversary photoshoot, you’re not just snapping some pics—you’re capturing your love story! And one of the best ways to make your photos truly magical? Body language! As Ursula says in The Little Mermaid, “Don’t underestimate the importance of body language!” Little things, like how you stand or touch, can take your photos from “meh” to “OMG, that’s so us!”

Don’t stress about being a posing pro—that’s what I’m here for! I’ll guide you into natural, flattering poses, but the best part? You get to make them your own! If it feels amazing, we’ll roll with it. If it feels awkward, just say so, and we’ll switch it up. My goal? For you to relax, laugh, and focus on your person (and maybe forget the camera is even there). Trust me, when you’re soaking up the moment together, the magic shines through—and your photos will be everything!

Why Body Language Matters in Couples Photography

Your body naturally tells a story—love, joy, excitement, comfort. In photos, powerful body language takes those emotions and turns them into something unforgettable, adding warmth and authenticity to every shot.

Here’s how to use body language to elevate your photos:

  • Closeness = Connection – The closer you are, the more intimate, romantic, and heartfelt your photo feels.

  • Small Gestures, Big Impact – A gentle hand-hold, a soft touch, or a forehead kiss can speak volumes and add layers of emotion.

  • Movement Brings Photos to Life – Walking hand in hand, twirling, dancing, or playful moments inject energy and make your images feel alive.

Use Body Language to Get Natural, Romantic Photos

1. Get Close & Stay Connected

The best couples photos have one thing in common—connection. That doesn’t mean you have to be wrapped around each other the whole time, but even small points of contact make a big difference. Try:

  • Holding hands—gently or intertwined, whatever feels natural.

  • Resting your head on their shoulder for a soft, intimate vibe.

  • Placing a hand on their chest or face to create warmth and tenderness.

I’ll guide you into positions that make sense for you, but once you’re there, lean into it. Stay close, breathe each other in, and let the moment settle.

2. Eye Contact vs. Looking Away

Your eyes tell a story, and in couples photography, where you’re looking can set the entire tone of the photo.

  • Looking at each other creates connection and romance.

  • Looking down or closing your eyes can feel soft and dreamy.

  • Looking at the camera works for a classic portrait feel.

We’ll mix it up to get a variety of shots, but if one of these feels more comfortable than another, we’ll roll with it!

3. Move Naturally

Movement brings photos to life. Instead of standing stiffly, we’ll incorporate simple movements to make your photos feel candid and effortless. Some ideas:

  • Walking hand in hand

  • Spinning your partner for a fun twirl

  • Swaying together like you’re dancing

  • Running toward or away from the camera for an action shot

I’ll prompt you with movements that feel natural, but if anything feels too forced, just let me know!

4. Mirroring Each Other’s Energy

A cool trick in couples photography is “mirroring”—subtly matching your partner’s body language. If one of you is relaxed, the other can soften, too. If one of you is being playful, the other can lean into that energy. It makes the images feel balanced and connected.

Tip: Communicate Your Comfort Level with Your Photographer

Natural, authentic photos stem from moments that truly reflect who you are as a couple. Body language is key to showcasing your connection and love, but your poses should always feel genuine and comfortable. If being touchy-feely doesn’t come naturally to you, that’s perfectly okay—just let me know! My goal is to ensure you feel at ease during the session. Together, we can adjust the poses to match your comfort level while still capturing heartfelt, beautiful images you’ll cherish.

How to Feel Comfortable with the Camera

I know that being in front of a camera can feel a little weird at first. But here’s the thing—you don’t need to “perform.” Just focus on your partner. Laugh, talk, touch, and interact like you would if I weren’t there. A few ways to ease into it:

  • Think of your shoot as a date – The more you focus on having fun with each other, the better your photos are.

  • Breathe and take your time – I’ll never rush you into a pose. We’ll let things happen naturally, capturing moments that feel authentic and true to you.

  • Trust me to guide you – If I see something that looks great, I’ll help adjust you into the best version of it with light suggestions like lifting your chin a little or adding a soft smile.

Turn Your Photoshoot into a Date

Want to make your photoshoot even more special? Let’s turn it into an experience! Instead of just showing up for a session, we can plan an activity within the shoot. Some ideas:

  • A picnic at a scenic overlook in Salt Lake City or Big Cottonwood Canyon

  • A coffee shop session for cozy, candid moments

  • A hike with breathtaking mountain views in Utah

  • Bringing a pet or incorporating a hobby you love

This makes the shoot more fun and gives you something to interact with, which helps with natural body language and storytelling.
