I had the privilege of photographing the B Family during their visit from Colorado, and we couldn’t have chosen a more breathtaking backdrop than the Wasatch Mountain State Park in Midway, Utah. When I scouted the location just a few weeks earlier, the ground was bare, but by the time of our session, it had been transformed into a snowy winter wonderland. The change was nothing short of magical!
Embracing the Snowy Surprise
When Mama B asked me to capture their annual family pictures during their vacation, I couldn’t have been more excited. There’s something so special about the tradition of yearly family portraits—a heartfelt way to preserve the growth, change, and milestones of a family over time. On the day of the shoot, we were met with snow flurries and freezing temperatures. Despite the cold, the B Family was incredible. They walked through the snow to explore the best spots in the park, smiling and laughing the whole way through. Their willingness to embrace the snowy scenery made for some truly magical moments.

Winter photoshoots can be challenging, but they’re also incredibly rewarding. Here are five tips for making the most of a snowy session:

Time It Right: Winter days are shorter, so take advantage of the golden hour for soft, flattering light. Early mornings or late afternoons often deliver the warm glow needed to balance the cool tones of the snow.

A Personal Touch
This session was special for another reason: my fiancé and our dog joined me for the ride. While I was busy capturing the B Family’s memories, they took a nice walk through the snow-covered trails. After the session, I was able to snap a few photos of my dog in the snow. It made for a fun afternoon driving from Salt Lake Valley to Midway, soaking in the beautiful snowy views. These moments reminded me how lucky I am to do what I love and share my passion for photography with my family.
