Engagement at Altitude: A Proposal on Angel’s Landing
ESTIMATED READ TIME: 6 MINUTES
Engagements are deeply personal moments that many couples dream about and meticulously plan. However, when that special moment is set against the breathtaking backdrop of Angel’s Landing in Zion National Park, it transcends ordinary expectations. As an adventure photographer, I typically capture such extraordinary events from behind the lens. But recently, I experienced the other side of the camera during my own engagement on Angel’s Landing, an experience that was as challenging as it was beautiful.

Preparing for the Hike
Angel’s Landing is renowned for being a challenging hike. To ensure we were prepared, we began training 3 months in advance in early March.
Training for the Trek
Preparing for Angel’s Landing involves both physical and mental readiness. Our training routine included:
Hiking Routines: Since March, my fiancé and family have been going on weekly Saturday morning hikes. We started with easy trails and progressively tackled more challenging ones until everyone felt confident and comfortable with different terrains and had traveled the same distance and elevation gain that would be required at Angels Landing.
Building Endurance and Strength: We incorporated daily walks, stair master sessions, and strength training exercises to prepare for the hike at the end of May.
Mapping your Hikes with AllTrails: My Fiancé used the AllTrails which allows you to search and map out hiking trails. We used this app to plan our training hikes, track our progress, and discover new trails as we continued to progress.
The Journey to the Top
The hike to the summit of Angel’s Landing is demanding but immensely rewarding. Every step brings you closer to the awe-inspiring views awaiting at the top.
The Special Moment: Engaged at the Summit
Reaching the summit of Angel’s Landing was a surreal experience. The panoramic views of Zion National Park were breathtaking, making the strenuous hike worthwhile.
The View from Angels Landing
The scenery from the top is nothing short of spectacular. The expansive vistas of rugged cliffs and verdant valleys create a natural amphitheater that amplifies the emotions of the moment. I took in the towering cliffs, sweeping valleys, and the majestic Virgin River winding below. Reaching the summit brought a mix of exhilaration, awe, and overwhelming joy. I couldn’t resist running off to capture the stunning views with my camera, eager to immortalize the landscape in photos. The experience was truly unforgettable.
As I came back from my excursion my fiancé naturally offered to hold my camera in which he quickly handed off to my future sister-in-law while my back was turned.
The Proposal
At the peak, with the stunning landscape as our backdrop, my fiancé dropped to one knee, opened the ring box and proposed. It was a moment of pure joy and love, one that I will cherish forever.
As he expressed his love and commitment, his heartfelt words resonated deeply with me. He spoke of our journey together, the challenges we’ve faced, and the dreams we share for the future. My emotions were overwhelming; an outpouring of happiness and love surged through me, bringing tears to my eyes. The crowd around us began to cheer as they realized he was proposing, adding to the magical moment. Their enthusiasm echoed our joy, making the experience even more unforgettable.
