There is something so special about following a couple’s love story from the start, capturing their connection during their engagement session, and then seeing it come full circle on their wedding day. That was exactly the case with this beautiful couple, whose love took me from Utah to an all-inclusive resort in Cancun, Mexico for their unforgettable destination wedding.

If they look familiar, it might be because you saw a featured post of their retro ’70s-inspired engagement shoot in Utah. That session was a total vibe, overflowing with free-spirited personality. So when they reached out for Cancun wedding photography, I already knew this day would be filled with love and laughter.

I hope they love this dedicated candid of the dress hanging

Getting Ready in the Bridal Suite

The afternoon kicked off in the resort’s bridal suite. The bride was surrounded by her bridesmaids, her mom, and her soon-to-be mother-in-law, all buzzing with excitement. But it wasn’t just glam and hairspray, they were hands on, assembling bouquets and boutonnieres while chatting and sipping on drinks.

While her curls were setting, the bride sat quietly and rewrote her vows by hand onto some paper. I love these peaceful moments in the getting-ready process; they’re so grounding before the whirlwind of the day.

One of the sweetest memories was her moment with her mom while adding her veil and jewelry pieces passed down from her grandmother. There was so much tenderness in that exchange. As a wedding photographer, these quiet, emotional pockets are some of my favorite things to capture.

A Rooftop Wedding Ceremony in Cancun, Mexico

The ceremony took place on the rooftop of one of the resort restaurants. From our vantage point, you could see the resort pool below, the beach, and the brilliant blue ocean meeting the sky. The scene was breathtaking.

The guests settled into their seats as the ceremony began. First, the groom made his entrance, followed by the groomsmen and bridesmaids. Finally, all eyes turned to the bride as she walked down the aisle, escorted by both her mother and father.

The ceremony was officiated by the bride’s brother, which made it deeply personal and heartfelt. His words were beautiful, filled with humor, memories, and love. The couple exchanged their own vows, both wiping away tears as they spoke. When they were pronounced husband and wife, they shared their first kiss as newlyweds, and then came one of my favorite moments:

Down in the pool below, resort guests had gathered and started cheering! It was the most unexpected and sweet touch. That spontaneous celebration made the couple burst into laughter, and it turned into a memory they’ll never forget.

Portraits in the Heat (and How We Handled It)

Cancun in wedding attire is no doubt a warm experience. The sun was hot and direct, paired with humidity. So, after the ceremony, we adjusted and made the best of it.

We moved quickly through the big group portraits and family photos. Because of the heat, the couple decided to skip full bridal party portraits and instead we focused on a short segment of formal portraits of the couple while the resort videographer captured his final content.

Everyone then had a break to retreat to their rooms, rehydrate, and freshen up before the reception began. It was the perfect pacing as it allowed everyone to reset and come back ready to celebrate.

Dinner, Toasts, and Signature Drinks

The reception was set up beautifully, with tables under the stars and soft lighting giving the space a dreamy glow. As dinner was served, the toasts began. The best man and maid of honor gave heartfelt speeches, followed by a few more guests who shared stories, advice, and memories that had everyone laughing (and occasionally tearing up again).

A super fun detail: the couple’s signature cocktail was called “The Hole In One”—a nod to the bride’s legendary moment on the golf course when she hit a hole in one! It was the perfect personalized touch, and guests loved it.

The First Dance & The Real Party

Once dinner wrapped, the celebration escalated as the sun disappeared. The couple cut their cake, shared their first dance, and then came the sweet moments of the dad-daughter and mom-son dances.

Then… the dance floor opened, and the real party began.

Everyone was on the floor. There were family members busting moves, the bride twirling in her dress, and full bridal party dropping it low. As a wedding photographer, I love when couples just let loose and fully enjoy the moment. This reception was one of those “dance like nobody’s watching” nights, and it was glorious.

A Final Send-Off

As the stars rose higher in the Cancun sky, we wrapped the night with a sweet send-off. The couple was surrounded by cheering guests, palm trees, and tropical air as they walked off into married life.

As a Utah wedding photographer who also travels for destination wedding photography, I feel so lucky to be trusted to document moments like these. This day reminded me why I love what I do. The sunshine, the storytelling, and the connections all come together in one unforgettable day.

Do you charge extra for travel and accommodation?

Yes, travel and accommodation costs are additional to the photography package.

How far in advance should I book you for my destination wedding?

Absolutely! I’m experienced in handling various lighting scenarios from bright, sunny beaches to dimly lit indoor venues.

How many photos will we receive?

On average, you’ll receive 50-100 photos per hour of coverage.

Yes! Many couples choose to do an engagement shoot at the destination, which can be a fun and creative way to capture the excitement leading up to your wedding day. It’s a great opportunity for us to connect and get comfortable working together.

How do you back up our photos to ensure they’re safe?

I use a multi-step backup process to protect your memories. Throughout your wedding day, I shoot using dual memory cards. Afterward, your images are immediately backed up to multiple drives to ensure they are safe and secure.
