There is something genuinely magical about walking into a home that just welcomed a brand new baby into the world. The mix of exhaustion and elation. The tiny outfits folded on the changing table. The bassinet that somehow feels like the most sacred piece of furniture in the entire apartment. As a Utah newborn photographer, I get to witness that specific, unrepeatable energy over and over again, and it never gets old. Honestly, it feels like a dream job.
M and S are two moms building their little family, and getting to photograph the very beginning of that chapter was such an honor. The Booking Process
Booking newborn sessions involves a lot of moving pieces. There is the due date, which babies treat as more of a loose suggestion. There is postpartum recovery. And then there is actually landing on a date that works for everyone. For newborn photography specifically, I love doing mornings or midday on weekdays. The day feels less rushed, and if we need to shift by a day or two, weekday sessions are so much easier to adjust than evenings or weekends.
For M and S, we originally chatted about using a studio space. And then, as life tends to do, that studio blocked off an entire week for construction. We talked through alternate options and ultimately they decided to use their apartment instead.
I want to address something here, because I hear this concern often: you do not need a fancy home to have beautiful newborn photos. M mentioned in her initial inquiry that she was a little worried their apartment might not make for the most aesthetic backdrop. I completely understand that hesitation, and I promise you, it almost never matters as much as people think.

Why Your Home Is Enough for a Lifestyle Newborn Session
When I do an in-home session, I always suggest choosing two areas to shoot in. This gives your final gallery variety without dragging everyone all over the place with a newborn in tow. For this session, they decided on their main bedroom and their living room; and it was more than enough.
Beautiful natural light, a few meaningful items, and real moments between real people will always beat a perfectly staged studio setup. For families who love a lifestyle newborn session, in-home is honestly where the magic lives. It is your smell, your light, your stuff. Baby already knows this space. That matters more than any studio backdrop or prop collection ever could.
Now, if your heart is set on something with more of a nature vibe, Utah is genuinely spoiled when it comes to outdoor options, especially in spring. But for a session this early in a newborn’s life, staying home and keeping things calm tends to serve everyone better. Outdoor newborn sessions are absolutely possible, but we always weigh the little one’s comfort and the weather before committing.
The Details They Provided
When I arrived, the family pulled out two blankets they wanted incorporated: a simple white one and a soft green blanket with baby C’s name on it. They also had a plain onesie and the most adorable crocheted outfit for him. Sweet does not even begin to cover it.
That is one of my favorite things about lifestyle sessions. You are bringing your things. The blanket grandma made. The onesie your sister bought. The little outfit you picked out before you even knew if he would fit into it. Those details become part of the story. They are the kind of pictures you will cherish forever, not because of any fancy props or wraps, but because they are yours.
Baby Was Fully, Completely, Wonderfully Awake
Baby C had eaten and slept before I arrived, which is genuinely the dream setup for newborn sessions. And then he woke right up and decided he was going to be very much a participant in the day. Wide awake, a little hungry, and very willing to let us know about it. I loved every second.
I always tell parents this before sessions and again when we are in the thick of it: it does not matter if your baby is sleeping or awake. Sleepy babies are gorgeous. Alert, eyes-open babies are gorgeous. A fussy, mid-cry little guy? Still gorgeous. I have never once left a session without images I am proud of, regardless of how cooperative the baby was. That is not something I say to be reassuring. I mean it completely and have the galleries to prove it.
Throughout C’s session, I kept reminding the mamas that any time he got fussy, they were completely welcome to pause. Pick him up, change positions, swap rooms, take a feeding break, change a diaper, whatever he needed. There is no timeline that matters more than baby’s comfort. That is true the entire time, start to finish.
My shooting style with newborns is fully lifestyle-based. I am not posing baby into a little cocoon or creating elaborate setups. What I am doing is watching you with your baby. I want the forehead kiss you give without thinking. I want the way one mom adjusts his tiny hands while the other tucks in the corner of his blanket. I want the moment you look at each other over his head and something passes between you that words could not hold anyway.
I always have parents do any adjustments of the baby rather than stepping in myself. That is intentional. I want to photograph you parenting, not me staging. There is a big difference, and it shows in the final images. These become timeless edits you will look back on for decades, not just pictures of a baby but pictures of your family becoming.
The In-Between Moments Are the Whole Point
There were a few moments during C’s session where the tears were flowing and he was making himself very heard. We paused. Mamas soothed him. I kept shooting.
Because here is the thing I want every parent to hear before they book: the calming moments are where the magic happens. The way you hold him differently when he is upset. The sound of your voice shifting. The way your partner reaches over and puts a hand on your back during the big moments when words feel like too much. Those in-between moments are not interruptions to the session. They are the session.
Some parents come in worried that a fussy baby means ruined photos. I am here to tell you, with complete confidence: it does not. Those are some of the most precious, real images I capture. They are the ones that make you catch your breath five years from now.
