Tess and Corey brought a fantasy world to life for their wedding day in Salt Lake City, Utah. Hosted at Thieves Guild Cidery, their celebration was a perfect blend of love and storytelling complete with Dungeons & Dragons inspiration, ren faire attire, and heartfelt moments that made the entire day unforgettable.

As a Utah wedding photographer, I have the privilege of documenting so many beautiful love stories, but this one stood out in such a creative way. From custom details to emotional vows, every part of Tess and Corey’s special day reflected who they are and what they love.

A Love Story That Started with Engagement Sessions

I first connected with Tess last year when they reached out about photographing not only their wedding, but also a double engagement session. We planned two completely different engagement sessions to reflect different sides of their relationship.

The first took place at Dreamscapes in Salt Lake City, where we leaned fully into fantasy and whimsy. The vibrant, surreal environments paired perfectly with their love for storytelling and imaginative worlds. Every frame felt like stepping into a different realm.

For their second session, we headed to Neff’s Canyon for a more natural, traditional feel. Surrounded by Utah’s beautiful mountain landscape, Tess and Corey brought along their dog, Poppy, making the session feel even more personal and grounded.

Fast forward to their big day and one of my favorite moments was seeing those engagement photos displayed in frames throughout the venue. That’s something that always brings a smile to my face. Seeing the full story come together from engagement sessions to the wedding day is incredibly meaningful.

Getting Ready at a Cozy Salt Lake City Airbnb

The morning began at a charming Airbnb just minutes from the venue. I arrived as Tess was putting the finishing touches on hair and makeup, and the space had a calm, anticipatory energy.

After capturing a few getting ready moments, I shifted into photographing details, something Tess had mentioned was especially important to them in a final gallery of wedding photos. For this day, the items included:

  • Handwritten vows
  • Hair piece, jewelry, wedding rings, and ring box
  • Custom D&D dice
  • Corey’s boutonniere
  • Tess’s veil
  • Custom embroidered Converse

A Note About Wedding Detail Photos from a Utah Wedding Photographer:
I always tell couples: I will take as much time as you can give me for detail photos, but I can absolutely work within a tight timeline if needed. Whether you have just a few meaningful items or an entire box of details, I love styling and capturing them in a way that tells your story.

A Custom Wedding Dress with Meaningful Design

After details, it was time for Tess to get dressed, and their outfit was truly one-of-a-kind. Their mom custom made the entire dress, and every piece was fully detachable: sleeves, skirt, cape/train, and veil. The back featured a corset-style design that required careful lacing.

While Tess and their mom worked on the final adjustments, I briefly stepped downstairs to photograph Corey getting ready. He was adding his belt and finishing his hair. These simple, quiet moments balance out the energy of the day beautifully.

Pro Tip for Future Couples:
If your dress includes a corset or intricate closure, time how long it takes to get into it ahead of your wedding date. Some dresses can take 15 minutes or more to lace properly, and building that into your timeline makes a big difference in keeping the day stress-free.

Thank you so much!! These photos are such treasures to me, you captured the day PERFECTLY

An Emotional First Look

Back upstairs, everything was ready for Tess and Corey’s first look, including Tess’s mom waiting to video the moment with a camcorder. When Corey walked in, the moment was immediate and emotional. They took each other in, both with tears in their eyes, fully present in the significance of the day. Afterward, Tess helped Corey apply eyeliner and add some finishing touches to his look. It was a small but meaningful moment that felt so authentically them.

A Joyful Wedding Party Reveal

We moved outside to the backyard, where their wedding party waited eagerly. When Tess and Corey stepped through the French doors, everyone turned, and the reaction was instant. Tears, laughter, hugs and then, one of their friends came forward and sprayed glitter over them, completing their fantasy-inspired look in the most celebratory way possible.

Thieves Guild Cidery: A Perfect Fantasy, Intimate Wedding Venue

Once everyone arrived at Thieves Guild Cidery, the transformation was already underway. The Sweet Simplicity Events team was hard at work setting up tables, décor, and backdrops that leaned beautifully into the tavern aesthetic. We captured family photos and wedding party portraits in front of the venue’s fireplace, which added a warm, medieval-inspired ambiance to the images.

Before guests arrived, I took Tess and Corey outside for a few quiet portraits, just the two of them. These moments are always some of my favorites on a wedding day, offering a chance to slow down and connect before the ceremony begins.

A Heartfelt Ceremony Officiated by Family

As guests filled the space, standing room included, the ceremony began. The wedding party processed in, followed by Tess joining Corey at the front. Once everyone was in place, the guests sat, leaving just the couple, their maid of honor, best man, and officiant standing. The officiant was Tess’s father, which added another personal layer to the ceremony.

Their vows were everything you hope for: funny, emotional, and deeply sincere. Hearing couples speak their own words to each other is one of the most meaningful parts of what I get to witness as a photographer. They exchanged rings, shared their first kiss, and walked back down the aisle as the room erupted in cheers.

Transitioning into a Lively Reception

Following the ceremony, the space quickly transformed as staff rearranged seating for the reception. Moochies Catering set up a delicious spread of sandwiches, salads, cookies, and chips, while the venue’s bartenders began serving drinks. The Dan’s Photo Booth team arrived and got their station ready, adding another layer of fun for guests.

First Dance and Special Moments

Tess and Corey shared their first dance surrounded by friends and family, followed by special dances that honored important relationships. Corey danced with his mom, and Tess shared a dance with their dad. In a heartfelt surprise, Tess also danced with their mom, an emotional and beautiful addition to the evening.

Cake Cutting and Celebration

The cake was created and decorated by their friend August, and it was stunning. Edible butterflies adorned both the cake and cupcakes, tying beautifully into the overall aesthetic. Tess and Corey cut the cake, fed each other a piece, and were met with cheers from their guests.

A Night Full of Laughter, Games, and Connection

As the evening continued, the celebration became a lively mix of conversation, laughter, and activity. Guests enjoyed drinks, took photos in the booth, and played board games provided by the venue, another thoughtful nod to Tess and Corey’s shared love of games and storytelling.

It felt less like a traditional reception and more like a gathering of adventurers in a tavern, exactly the vibe they had envisioned. Some of these candid, precious moments are my favorite to include in my clients’ wedding galleries.

You were incredible! You captured every little detail and moment. We sat in a group call and gushed over these photos for 2 hours after you delivered them!
