The crowds were gathering and somewhere in the sea of excited hikers was a couple from Delaware who were about to experience one of the most life-changing moments of their lives. This was Rebecca and Liz’s surprise proposal at Angel’s Landing, and I was honored to be their Utah surprise proposal photographer.
Rebecca reached out to me about a month before their trip, full of excitement and nerves, wanting to orchestrate a proposal that was both adventurous and intimate. They had just won the seasonal permit lottery for Angel’s Landing, a hike known for its breathtaking views and heart-pounding chains that guard the final ascent. Planning Everything With A Utah Proposal Photographer
Planning a surprise proposal from out of state can be daunting, but I’m here to help every step along the way! Rebecca reached out a month in advance, eager to create a moment that would be unforgettable for Liz. Their Angel’s Landing permits were secured through the seasonal lottery, but I needed to apply for the day-before lottery to join them. In the meantime, we made a backup plan for another beautiful area in Zion just in case.
Despite meticulous planning, uncertainty lingered. When the day-before permit lottery came around, I wasn’t selected. But love has a way of finding its path. Rebecca had rallied a few friends to enter the lottery as well, listing me as an alternate. One of them won the permit and sent it over. Suddenly, the path was clear: this proposal was going to happen just as we had planned.
This part of the story is what makes Angel’s Landing proposals so memorable because of the teamwork, the coordination, and the unwavering determination. In moments like this, it becomes clear that the journey to the proposal is just as meaningful as the moment itself.

Easter Weekend in Zion + Shuttle Experience
I arrived at the shuttle area around 6:40 AM, just ahead of the first shuttle that would depart at 7:00 AM. Zion National Park’s shuttle system is mandatory during the busy season, running typically from March through late November, though there are options like bicycles or e-bikes for those seeking a bit more freedom.
As I scanned the crowd, Rebecca spotted me first and gave me a secret wink. Weeks of planning had paid off and we were able to find each other quickly amidst the flurry of hikers. We both boarded the third shuttle of the morning without Liz having any suspicion, making our way to Stop 6 – The Grotto, the official trailhead for Angel’s Landing.
The Hike Up + Scout Lookout Moment
I hiked ahead to Scout Lookout, pausing to savor the view and snack while waiting for the couple to catch up. Moments like this are perfect for soaking in the scenery, taking mental snapshots of the towering cliffs, and spotting wildlife. On this particular morning, a ranger pointed out two California condors perched in a distant tree. With fewer than 400 condors left in the wild, seeing two in the same spot was rare and breathtaking. At one point during the hike, one of them flew pretty close to the mountainside. I have to say, they are beautiful, ugly, massive, and incredible all at the same time. It was a sight to see.
The Final Ascent
As we climbed the chains leading to the summit, I blended in with other hikers, chatting and connecting. Trail camaraderie makes these adventures feel alive, and it allowed me to stay discreet, preserving the surprise. These small details help me blend in for the surprise, and are essential for authentic moments.
The Proposal at the Summit
Reaching the summit first, I quickly secured a spot with a perfect view of the canyon below. The wind whipped across the cliffs, carrying the scent of pine and the sound of distant chatter. I adjusted my camera settings, waiting for Rebecca and Liz to arrive. Once I spotted them, I asked for a phone photo of myself, then took one of them as well. This is always my first attempt at setting the stage for the proposal, but it’s always up to the couple if this is the right big moment or not.
The couple went over to one of the viewpoint areas and enjoyed a snack while taking some photos. Eventually, Rebecca asked Liz to stand, rummaging through her pack as emotions ran high. The morning hike, the anticipation, and the effort to secure permits all led to this moment. She popped the question and Liz said yes!
My favorite part that happens as I swoop in taking more photos is when the other partner realizes I’m there. When Liz noticed me with her camera, she pointed and laughed saying “Oh my gosh! You’re the lady that took our photo earlier!” I introduced myself, letting them have a private moment to celebrate before moving into posed portraits.
The joy was palpable. The wind tossed their hair, the canyon stretched endlessly behind them, and their smiles radiated pure happiness. As an LGBTQ-friendly photographer, moments like this are exactly why I do what I do.
Post-Proposal Celebration + Photos
We captured ring shots, intimate portraits, and candid laughter at the summit. Every glance, touch, and shared smile told the story of their love. It was a moment of pure celebration, where they could be fully themselves, unguarded and completely in love. Hiking Down Together
Rebecca and Liz invited me to hike down with them, allowing for more relaxed, candid moments. We paused at scenic overlooks, shared stories about the hike, and celebrated their engagement all the way down. The journey back down felt almost ceremonial, each step echoing the start of a new chapter together.
Before parting ways, we took final portraits by the Visitor Center. The mood was lighter, more relaxed, but the joy and excitement lingered. From the nervous energy of the shuttle line to the elation at the summit, their journey together had been captured in every frame, telling a story of adventure, love, and authenticity.
