Putting Your Best Foot Forward On The Apps By Hiring A Utah Online Dating Photographer
ESTIMATED READ TIME: 6 MINUTES

Online dating has changed the way people meet. Whether you’re swiping through profiles, browsing introductions, or responding to messages, your photos are usually the first thing someone notices. They’re your first impression and in many cases, they determine whether someone decides to start a conversation.
That’s exactly why my client Matt reached out. He wanted to update the photos on his profile and put his best foot forward. Like many people who contact me for this type of session, he realized that most of the photos he had available simply weren’t ideal for online dating. Some were older photos. Some were group shots where it wasn’t obvious which person he was. Others were casual phone pictures that didn’t really show his personality.
As a Salt Lake City dating photographer, I work with people all the time who realize they need better photos for their dating profiles but don’t know where to start. That’s where a portrait session with an online dating app photographer can make a huge difference.

Why So Many People Don’t Have Good Solo Photos
One thing I’ve noticed over the years is that many adults simply don’t have many quality photos of themselves alone. In most cases, photos happen in group settings like weddings, family pictures, holidays, or vacations. Those are wonderful memories, but they don’t always translate well to a dating profile.
Other times, people are relying on selfies or quick snapshots taken with their phones. While there’s nothing wrong with casual photos, they often don’t show someone at their best.
And then there are the people who are stepping into online dating for the first time after a long relationship or marriage. In those cases, many of their photos include a former partner or their children, or they simply haven’t had a reason to take new photos of themselves in years.
As a photographer for online dating in Salt Lake City, I regularly work with people in all of these situations. My goal is to create photos that feel authentic, confident, and approachable.

Matt’s Dating Portrait Session
When Matt arrived for his session, we spent a little time chatting before jumping into photos. This is one of my favorite parts of the process. Photography sessions aren’t just about posing in front of a camera, they’re about building a little bit of connection so the photos feel natural.
During dating portrait sessions, I like to keep things relaxed and conversational. We walk, talk, and laugh along the way. Sometimes we’ll pause at different spots for photos, and sometimes we’ll take a few candid shots while moving between locations.
This approach helps people settle into the experience quickly. Instead of feeling stiff or overly posed, clients start to relax and show genuine expressions. Those authentic smiles and relaxed moments are exactly what work best for online dating profiles.

What Makes a Great Online Dating Photo?
One thing people often ask me is what actually makes a photo work well for a dating profile.
First, the photo should clearly show your face. This might sound obvious, but many profiles include photos where the person is wearing sunglasses, looking away from the camera, or standing far in the distance. Those photos can make it difficult for potential matches to connect with you.
Second, good lighting matters more than most people realize. Natural light can dramatically improve how a photo looks.
Third, variety is important. A strong dating profile usually includes multiple types of photos. Some close-up portraits, some more relaxed lifestyle images, and maybe even a full-body shot. This helps create a fuller picture of who you are.
As a Salt Lake City dating photographer, my goal is to create a gallery that gives clients several different photos they can use across their profiles.
Dating Portrait Sessions Are for Every Age
One thing I really love about offering these sessions is the variety of people I get to meet. Online dating isn’t just for people in their twenties. Over the years, I’ve worked with clients ranging from their early twenties all the way up into their fifties and sixties.
Every stage of life comes with its own story. Some clients are just beginning their adult dating lives. Others are recently divorced and navigating dating apps for the first time in decades. Some simply want to refresh their photos and feel confident putting themselves out there again.
No matter someone’s age or background, the goal is the same: to create photos that feel genuine and represent them in a positive, confident way. Everyone deserves the opportunity to find meaningful connection. And sometimes, having a great photo is what helps open that first door.

My Online Dating Photography Packages
When clients reach out for dating portraits, I offer two different packages so people can choose the experience that works best for them. Some people want a quick, efficient session that gives them a handful of strong profile photos. Others prefer a longer session that allows us to dive into more outfit options and create a wider variety of images.
Both options are designed with online dating in mind. The goal is always to create photos that feel natural, not overly staged or overly polished. Because at the end of the day, the best dating photos are the ones that still look like you.
Making the Experience Comfortable (Even If You’re Camera-Shy)
One concern I hear often is: “I’m not good in front of the camera.”
Very few of my clients show up saying they love being photographed. That’s completely normal. My job as a photographer is to guide people through the process so they don’t have to worry about posing, expressions, or what to do with their hands.
I’ll offer simple direction when needed, but I also leave room for natural moments to happen. Sometimes the best photos come from spontaneous laughter during conversation rather than a perfectly planned pose. By the end of most sessions, people are surprised by how relaxed and fun the experience feels.

Why Professional Photos Can Make a Difference
Dating apps are visual platforms. People scroll through dozens of profiles, often making decisions in just a few seconds. A high-quality photo can help someone click into your profile to read your bio and see the answers to prompts.
It’s not about creating unrealistic expectations or presenting a version of yourself that isn’t real. Instead, it’s about showing the best version of yourself in a way that feels genuine and confident.
