utah wedding photographer who loves photographing proposals

There’s something timeless about a fall proposal in Utah. The crisp mountain air, the golden glow of the leaves, and the quiet beauty of the Wasatch back make it the perfect backdrop for one of life’s biggest milestones. As a Utah proposal photographer, I get to witness and document so many unique love stories, but this Cascade Springs surprise proposal will always stand out as one of my favorites.

Not only was it set against the fiery red and golden leaves of early fall, but it also carried extra meaning for the couple. The proposal happened during their annual fall leaves drive which is something they look forward to every year together. It was the perfect tradition to build upon with the start of their forever.

Planning a Surprise Proposal During Utah’s Fall Season

My client reached out well in advance with the idea of proposing during their yearly drive through the mountains. At first, we worried about timing. Their chosen date overlapped with my honeymoon, which meant I wouldn’t be in town. But lucky for both of us, Utah’s fall colors showed up early this year! By moving the date up two weeks, we caught Cascade Springs at the perfect time when the hillsides were glowing with red, yellow, orange, and green.

As a photographer, I always recommend planning proposals around the unpredictability of Utah’s fall season. Some years, the colors peak in late September. Other years, it doesn’t fully hit until mid-October. By keeping your timeline flexible, you’ll increase your chances of capturing those bold autumn tones.

Arriving at Cascade Springs

Cascade Springs, located near Midway, Utah, is a hidden gem for proposals, engagements, and elopements. The boardwalk trails, bubbling springs, and mountain vistas make it a breathtaking backdrop for photos at any time of year, but in fall, it truly comes alive.

When I arrived, I was met with sweeping views of golden aspens, crimson maples, and the last hints of green tucked into the hills. The air had that crisp bite that only happens in autumn. It was the kind of morning that immediately tells you: Fall is here.

I found my hiding spot along the trail and prepared my gear, ready for the big moment.

The “Boo Basket” Decoy

One of my favorite details from this proposal was the playful element my client brought along. He had put together a “Boo Basket” with festive fall gifts. Inside, he hid a fake Halloween spider ring as a decoy to throw her off the scent.

It worked perfectly. She laughed, slipped it on, and had no idea that a real proposal was just moments away. These kinds of thoughtful, personal touches are what make proposals so much more meaningful (and fun to photograph!).

Capturing the Candid Moments

As they began walking down the Cascade Springs trail, I followed behind at a respectful distance, blending in as a landscape photographer. I snapped wide shots of the scenery, sneaky candids of the couple holding hands, and little details that told the story of their day.

When we reached our agreed-upon clearing near the water, I gave my client a discreet thumbs-up. He gently guided her closer to the water, reached into his pocket, and pulled out a small pumpkin-shaped ring box.

And then… he dropped to one knee.

The Reaction To The Big Question

Her reaction was absolutely priceless. She gasped, put her hands over her face, and kept asking, “Is this really happening?” The shock, the joy, and the flood of emotion all unfolded within seconds and I was there to photograph every single expression.

After she said yes, the two of them hugged, kissed, and laughed together, still in disbelief that their annual fall drive had turned into one of the most memorable days of their lives.

Transitioning into Engagement Photos

Once the proposal was complete, I introduced myself (no longer the sneaky photographer in the background!) and congratulated them. We then transitioned into a mini engagement session, using the stunning Cascade Springs scenery as our backdrop.

I always love this part of the process where couples are glowing, full of adrenaline, and so deeply in the moment. Their smiles are real, their laughter is unposed, and their joy radiates in every photo. To keep the mood light, I asked them questions about the proposal like whether she had suspected anything, what part surprised her the most, and how the plan came together. Those conversations always spark genuine laughter and ease any nerves about being in front of the camera.

Why Cascade Springs is a Perfect Proposal Location

Cascade Springs has quickly become one of my favorite spots for surprise proposals and engagements in Utah, and here’s why:

  • Variety of scenery: You get waterfalls, boardwalk trails, open meadows, and mountain views all in one place.
  • Accessibility: It’s just outside Midway and accessible by a short drive from Salt Lake City, Provo, or Park City.
  • Seasonal beauty: Whether it’s spring wildflowers, summer greenery, fall colors, or winter snow, it’s breathtaking year-round.
  • Intimate spaces: Even when the area is busy, there are small clearings and quiet corners perfect for a private proposal.

Tips for Planning a Surprise Proposal in Utah

If you’re thinking about proposing in Utah, whether at Cascade Springs, Big Cottonwood Canyon, or somewhere else, here are a few tips to make the moment unforgettable in the perfect location:

1. Hire a Photographer Who Knows the Area

Locations like Cascade Springs can get crowded during fall. A local photographer can help you choose the right time of day and spot for privacy, as well as plan backup locations in case of unexpected crowds.

2. Create a Clear Signal

A simple hand gesture, like a thumbs-up or touching your hat, lets your photographer know when you’re about to pop the question. This ensures they’re in position to capture the moment without you needing to say a word.

3. Add Personal Touches

Whether it’s a pumpkin ring box, a Boo Basket, or incorporating a tradition like your annual fall drive, personal details make the proposal unique and memorable.

4. Trust the Candid Shots

Some of the most emotional photos happen in the seconds before and after the “Yes.” Let your photographer capture the hugs, excited tears, and laughter that follow.

5. Think About Lighting

Proposals during golden hour (the hour before sunset) give you soft, romantic light that elevates the entire atmosphere of your photos.

Proposal Photography vs. Engagement Sessions

Some couples choose to book only an engagement session, while others book both a proposal and formal engagements. Here’s why I recommend doing both:

  • Proposal photography captures the raw, unposed reaction and the real story of the special day and how your engagement began. We also photograph posed shots as well afterwards.
  • Engagement sessions give you a chance to get dressed up, choose a location that reflects your style, and get comfortable in front of the camera before your wedding day. My couples can bring along another outfit as well so they get variety in their final gallery to use on save-the-dates, wedding websites, and wedding day decor.

Together, they tell a complete love story.

Why Hire a Utah Proposal Photographer?

A surprise proposal is one of those once-in-a-lifetime moments that deserves to be documented. Hiring a professional proposal photographer ensures:

  • You won’t have to rely on strangers with cell phones.
  • You’ll receive high-quality images that showcase not just the “Yes,” but the entire story.
  • You’ll have someone who knows how to blend in, anticipate the moment, and be ready for it.
  • You’ll walk away with engagement photos you can use right away for announcements and save-the-dates.
