Classy Meets Edgy Birthday Portraits at McCune Mansion
ESTIMATED READ TIME: 4 MINUTES

Every birthday deserves to be celebrated in style, and Angie’s 32nd was no exception. After our downtown Salt Lake City editorial shoot, we headed to one of the city’s most iconic landmarks: McCune Mansion. With its red brick exterior, sweeping staircase, and regal architecture, this fun location gave us a completely different vibe: where bold baddie confidence meets timeless elegance.
If downtown was all about grit and flash, McCune Mansion was about contrast, pairing Angie’s edgy personal style with a backdrop that radiated history, sophistication, and grandeur.

Why McCune Mansion Was the Perfect Birthday Shoot Location
When you want portraits that stand out, location matters. I suggested McCune Mansion in Salt Lake City because of its dramatic architecture and commanding staircase. We didn’t even need to go inside since the exterior alone offered endless possibilities. By staying on the steps and corners, we respected the space while still capturing its bold impact.

For this set, Angie blended timeless fashion with her signature baddie twist:

- Scarf – versatile accessory for both movement and styling
- Sunglasses – because no Angie look is complete without them
- Hand fan – carried over from downtown, adding drama and flair

Posing with Movement in Salt Lake City, Utah
While downtown was fierce and gritty, McCune Mansion gave us space for something more fluid and playful. Angie leaned into movement by tossing the edge of her dress and waving the fan.
Every shot carried motion and personality, balancing elegance with baddie energy. She looked like she could’ve stepped out of a glossy magazine, but every pose still felt authentically her.

A Moment of Calm During The Photoshoot
Compared to the busy streets of downtown, the mansion felt serene. Without the distractions of traffic or random alley surprises, we could focus fully on Angie’s energy and styling.
This part of the session was simple, lighthearted, and creative. We played with scarf variations, experimented with poses, and laughed through the process. Sometimes, the calmest shoots bring out the most natural magic.

Working With Harsh Sunlight As a Utah Portrait Photographer
Unlike shaded urban alleys, McCune Mansion’s steps are fully exposed to midday sun. Harsh light can be tricky, but instead of avoiding it, I leaned in.
By embracing bold shadows, highlights, and even a few lens flares, I gave the images a striking mood. I also swapped lenses mid-shoot for variety, pushing myself creatively in real time. The results? Luminous, bold portraits that became some of my favorites from the entire birthday gallery.

Reflecting on the Shoot
What I love most about this stop was the contrast it created with downtown. The gritty, editorial city portraits paired beautifully with the refined, elegant mansion shots. Together, they gave Angie a gallery that was not only bold and stylish but also layered and dynamic.
She wanted to feel like a baddie, and this part of the shoot proved that being a baddie can also mean being chic, playful, and effortlessly stylish.
