tips for family photoshoot

Family photoshoots are supposed to freeze the good stuff. The love, the growth, the way your kids look at each other when they think no one’s watching. But if you’ve ever actually been through one, you know they can also be a lot. Coordinating outfits, wrangling a tired toddler, carrying around this quiet pressure that everything needs to be perfect. I get it, and I promise, none of that has to be part of your session.

With a little planning and the right mindset, your family photoshoot can be something you actually enjoy, not just survive. Here’s how.

Setting the Stage: Preparing for Picture-Perfect Moments

Tip 1: Plan Ahead and Communicate

Good planning and honest communication are the foundation of a calm, successful session. Here’s what actually helps:

Start with coordination. Pick colors or a general palette that work together for everyone’s outfits. It doesn’t need to be matchy-matchy, it just needs to feel cohesive.

Tell me everything. Seriously, don’t hold back. The vibe you’re picturing, the style you love on Pinterest, that one photo you loved from years past that you want to recreate, all of it helps me help you.

Talk through your must-haves. If there’s a specific combination of people or a particular shot you need, let’s talk about it ahead of time so nobody’s expectations get missed.

Handling these details early means no last-minute scrambling, and it means you walk into your session already feeling good instead of frazzled.

Tip 2: Choose the Right Location

Your location isn’t just a backdrop, it can reflect your family’s story. Here’s how I think about helping families choose:

Group size matters. A big extended family usually needs more room to breathe, while a smaller family can get away with something cozier and more intimate.

What mood are you going for? Rolling hills give off a different vibe than an urban cityscape. If you have little ones, your own home might be the best option to show some genuine moments.

The truth is, your location should feel like it belongs to your family’s story, whether that’s where you got engaged, your childhood home, or somewhere that just feels like “you.” I love working through this with clients, because the right spot adds so much depth to the final gallery.

Tip 3: Small vs. Large Groups

Whether it’s just the four of you or a full house of cousins and grandparents, the goal is the same: capture what your family actually feels like together. Here’s what that looks like on my end.

For Smaller Families:

Expect something cozy and intimate. Soft light, comfortable spots to sit, and space for those quiet, candid moments to happen naturally. I love keeping these sessions playful. A shared joke, a favorite family game, whatever gets you laughing for real.

For Larger Families:

These take a bit more coordination, and that’s okay. I’ll work with you ahead of time on a loose plan so the day runs smoothly. Sometimes I’ll suggest a simple shot list so we don’t miss any combination you’re hoping for.

No matter your family’s size, the goal is always the same: real love, really captured. And afterward, I love pulling up a few images together so you can see what we got. It usually turns into its own sweet little moment.

Tip 4: Working with Small Children

Capturing kids well isn’t about perfect lighting. It’s about timing, mostly.

Work around their schedule. Avoid nap time and meal time like the plague. A well-fed, well-rested kid is going to give you so much more than an overtired one.

Let them play. Kids are naturally playful, so lean into that. Some of my favorite images come from games and silliness, not posed moments.

Build in breaks. A few minutes to reset goes a long way toward keeping everyone cooperative and happy.

Stay flexible. Sometimes the plan goes sideways, and that’s fine. Some of the best photos I’ve ever taken happened because something unexpected turned into something wonderful.

Tip 5: Give Yourself Extra Time

A few small things can make a big difference in how your session actually feels:

Traffic happens. Factor in the time of day and give yourself a buffer so you’re not showing up frazzled.

Outfits change at the last minute. It happens more than you’d think. Build in a little extra time so a wardrobe change doesn’t send anyone into a panic.

Arriving early is a gift to yourself. It gives your family a few minutes to explore, settle in, and just be together before the camera comes out. That calm carries straight through into your photos.

Use that time to settle. Take a breath. Let the rush melt off before we start. It shows.

Tip 6: Be Flexible with Your Schedule

Flexibility might be the single most underrated ingredient in a great family session.

Golden hour is lovely, but it’s not everything. Life is spontaneous, and honestly, so is good light.

Work with your family’s actual rhythm. If mornings are when your toddler is at their best, let’s shoot in the morning. Your real life should shape the session, not the other way around.

Genuine light plus genuine smiles beats a “perfect” moment every time.

Let go of the need for perfection, and you’ll find room for the candid, unscripted moments that end up being everyone’s favorites anyway.

Tip 7: Embrace Spontaneity and Fun

If you want photos that actually feel like you, spontaneity is the secret ingredient.

  • Skip “say cheese.” I’d much rather have someone tell a joke and catch the real laugh that follows.
  • Bring a ball, play a quick game of tag, whatever gets your kids moving and genuinely engaged.
  • If something unplanned happens, like a gust of wind or a stranger’s dog wandering into frame, don’t stress. Those moments often become the story you tell for years.
  • Bring the things that matter. A well-loved stuffed animal or whatever helps the little ones feel more like themselves in front of the camera.
  • And remember, the best photos are almost never the perfectly posed ones. They’re the ones full of real emotion and a little bit of mess.

Tip 8: Trust Your Photographer

This one’s simple, but it matters more than people expect.

Let the process happen. Photography is about capturing a moment, not just clicking a shutter. Trust that I know how to find it.

Authenticity over perfection, always. If your kid makes goofy faces, let them. That’s the good stuff.

Hand over the reins. I’ve spent years learning light, timing, and how to help people feel comfortable in front of a camera. Let me do that part so you can just be present with your family.

The imperfect moments are the whole point. The messy hair, the big laugh, the shy glance away from the lens. Those are the images that actually feel like your family, not a stock photo of one.
