Sunset Family Session at Silver Lake | Utah Family Photographer
ESTIMATED READ TIME: 7 MINUTES

The James family reached out to me to capture beautiful family photos before some of their loved ones moved out of state. Life changes quickly, and there’s no better way to preserve those in-between chapters than with a relaxed family photo session in one of Utah’s most breathtaking locations.
“Mom J” took my styling tips to heart, creating the perfect example of “cohesive but not matching.” Instead of identical outfits, they chose complementary tones and textures that blended beautifully with the backdrop of Big Cottonwood Canyon.
We chose Silver Lake, tucked near Brighton Ski Resort, for its combination of open boardwalks, sparkling water, and lush forest trails. Meeting just before sunset gave us that golden-hour glow that’s soft, flattering, and perfect for portraits.

Walking the Silver Lake Boardwalk at Golden Hour
We began along the winding Silver Lake boardwalk, which loops around the water with mountain views in every direction. The light was soft and warm, casting a golden shimmer across the lake.
Along the way, we stopped at:
- A bend where the lake mirrored the sky
- A quiet grove of trees just off the trail
- A small dock framed by the surrounding peaks
One of my favorite parts of family photography is blending timeless, posed portraits with genuine, unscripted moments or candid shots. The boardwalk can feel a little narrow for free movement, so I guide families into natural interactions between poses. This can be anything from big hugs, shared laughter, or even a playful headlock, whatever feels true to them rather than forced smiles. Often, it’s these small, unplanned moments that tell the most authentic story.

Into the Forest for a Different Vibe
Next, we stepped into the forest just beyond the trail. The vibe shifted to a moodier setting with sunlight filtered through tall pines, and earthy tones with a cozy feel.
We stayed in pockets of sunshine for group shots while enjoying the peaceful sounds of the area (including a curious family of ducks waddling nearby). It was a perfect, quiet pause in the middle of the session for some serene images.

Wrapping Up Family Photos at the Boulders
As the sun dipped lower, we made our way back toward the parking area and spotted a moose calmly munching on leaves just off the boardwalk. The family absolutely loved this surprise visitor!
We finished at a cluster of large boulders near the lot, where we took our final group shots and a few candid and posed individual portraits. The rugged rock made for a strong, natural backdrop to end the evening.
Planning Your Family Photography Session at Silver Lake
If you’re dreaming of a mountain-lake setting for your family portraits, Silver Lake is a stunning choice. Here’s what to know before you go:
Permits & Passes
Big Cottonwood Canyon is part of the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest and certain recreation sites require a “Day Use” pass:
Day Use Pass: $10 for 3 days or $20 for 7 days
America the Beautiful Pass: $80/year (valid at all U.S. National Parks & Federal Lands)
Check the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest website for current details.
Seasonal Access & Rules
The Silver Lake boardwalk is typically open from May through October, depending on snow levels. In winter, it’s part of the Solitude Nordic Center’s cross-country skiing network. During snowy months, we can choose another location, like Donut Falls boardwalk, just a short drive away.
Because it’s part of a protected watershed, there are strict rules:
No dogs (to protect the water supply)
No swimming in the lake or nearby streams
These rules help keep the area pristine for both wildlife and visitors.
Timing & Lighting for Family Photos
Golden hour here is unbeatable with the forest glow and sparkles on the lake. For younger children, we can adjust session times seasonally for the best balance of light and happy faces. Happy kids have fun on camera and that’s when their personalities can shine through.
Outfit Coordination
The James family’s “cohesive but not matching” approach is my favorite. Quick tips:
- Choose 3–4 main colors (neutrals + one or two accents)
- Mix textures like knits, denim, and linen
- Avoid busy logos or neon tones
- Consider the season so your colors complement the scenery
Mobility & Comfort for the Whole Family
The boardwalk is flat and stroller-friendly, but the forest trail has a few uneven spots, so comfortable shoes are a must. This is a great location option for Utah family photos of multiple generations.
Wildlife Awareness
From moose to squirrels, you never know who might wander by. Always keep a respectful distance and follow posted guidelines.

Why I Love Family Photography in Big Cottonwood Canyon
Few places in Utah offer such variety in such a small radius:
- Open lake views
- Wooden boardwalks lined with wildflowers
- Shaded forest trails
- Rugged mountain rock formations
Every season brings its own charm like lush greens in summer, warm golds in fall, and snow-dusted pines in winter, making it one of my favorite locations.
